Finding the Right Beauty Mirror

The name says it all with this handy bathroom mirror: a beauty mirror is used by women, and more frequently by men, for beautifying themselves. It is also often used as a shaving mirror. Regardless of what it is used for, every household should have a beauty mirror.

Beauty mirrors are always magnifying mirrors, making the face visible in more detail - perfect for precise makeup application or shaving. Many beauty mirrors have two sides with different strengths of magnifying glass. Others only have one side that magnifies while the other side is a standard mirror.

Which Beauty Mirror is Best?

We are often asked this question which is not straightforward to answer because many subjective factors apply here that are up to you to decide upon:

• Should the beauty mirror be lit up or not?
• Should it be a standing, wall-mounted or pocket mirror?
• Which magnification factor should I choose?

Wall-mounted mirror, standing mirror or pocket mirror?

If you are looking for a beauty mirror, you'll need to decide whether you want a wall-mounted mirror, standing mirror, hand mirror or pocket mirror.

Wall-mounted mirrors are fixed to the wall and usually have a swivel arm for adjusting the position. Some of them only move left and right, whereas others can move backwards and forwards.

The benefit of wall-mounted mirrors: the mirror doesn't take up any room. Disadvantage: it can only be used in a specific area. Holes also usually have to be drilled into the tiles to mount it.

We do offer some beauty mirrors with suction pads however. These are more variable in terms of where they can be used, since it can be attached anywhere, although they often don't come with a swivel arm. Only a few suction cup mirrors are adjustable and can be tailored to personal requirements.

Standing mirrors sit on the washbasin or dressing table. They can be easily be placed wherever a tabletop mirror is required. However, beauty mirrors often get in the way when you're not using them.

Pocket mirrors are beauty mirrors you can carry around with you. They are so small that they fit in any handbag. They fold together to protect the sensitive glass. We also offer other hand mirrors for home use in our range. These are a little larger, with a handle, and do not fold together.

Illuminated or not?

Once you have chosen an installation type, you now need to ask yourself whether your beauty mirror should have lights or not.

Illuminated beauty mirrors have the benefit of perfectly illuminating every tiny detail on the face. If you pluck your eyebrows or examine skin blemishes, you should opt for an illuminated beauty mirror.

But beware: the light can blind you when shaving or applying make-up and rarely produces a natural light. This is not suitable for styling. Always check the quality.

High-quality mirrors allow you to adjust the light colour - from a warm white to daylight white. Daylight white displays colours better and is ideal for applying makeup. If this is too bright, you can choose the warm white mode which is more comfortable.

Illuminated beauty mirrors have the disadvantage of requiring a power supply which can be rare to come by in a bathroom. However, you'll also find battery-operated make-up mirrors in our store.

Modern illuminated mirrors are usually fitted with energy-saving LEDs, however we also offer toilet mirrors in our store which use other types of light.

What magnification to choose?

The next step is to choose the magnification factor for your new beauty mirror. This is really only up to you to decide how much you want your face to be magnified by.

For the majority, a beauty mirror with triple or 5-times magnification is perfectly adequate. For glasses wearers with severely impaired vision, 7-times or even 10-times magnification may be required. In this case, you will only be able to see part of your face in the mirror, such as from the forehead to the chin.

For shaving and precise make-up application for non-glasses wearers, triple magnification is sufficient. Around 70 percent of the face can be seen in the mirror.

For plucking eyebrows or examining skin blemishes, 5-times magnification is advisable. Glasses wearers should also choose this magnification level. The face completely fills this magnifying mirror.

As already mentioned, some make-up mirrors have two different mirrors. One side may have triple magnification and the other side 7-times magnification. This is handy because you can choose one of them depending on your needs.

Off-topic: If you've often asked yourself why beauty mirrors show an enlarged image, the answer is quite simple: the surface of the mirror is a concave shape, also known as a concave mirror. The more concave the glass surface, the higher the magnification factor. Experts talk of an arc radius.
