Family business in the digital age - 30 years Reuter
As a family business, Reuter operates quickly, flexibly and successfully in a growing market - and has done so for more than 30 years. The market leader uses its financial independence to constantly invest in its own future. See for yourself how Reuter has grown from a small plumbing company to one of the largest specialists and online retailers for bathrooms and home decor.
„When I founded my plumbing company 'Bernd Reuter Heizung und Sanitär' in 1986, this development was unimaginable. At that time, most of our customers came mainly from the regional area. Today we ship bathroom products throughout Germany and to 26 other countries.“
Bernd Reuter, CEO
1986: The Reuter story begins
From plumbing to specialised trading
1986 Bernd Reuter founds the plumbing business "Bernd Reuter Heizung und Sanitär" with only one apprentice. The company grows and flourishes and is renamed "Reuter Heizung & Sanitär GmbH" in 1994. In the same year, the first Reuter bathroom showroom for sanitary products opens in Niederkrüchten, Germany. Step by step, the next few years will see a change from a classic plumbing business to a competent bathroom and sanitary specialist retailer.
2004: Idea for Success
Online shop for bathoom products
2004 Reuter is one of the first in the branch to recognise the signs of the times and starts online sales of bathroom products with the "Reuter Badshop", an overwhelming success, which leads to a rapid growth of the family business. That is why Bernd Reuter decides to professionalise his online business. In 2005 a 1,000 sqm distribution and logistics centre was built in Niederkrüchten, Germany, which however was soon to become too small.
2008: Pioneer in the sanitary sector
On course for growth
By combining different channels, Reuter has developed into one of the largest specialists and online retailers and pioneers in the sanitary business. The showroom in Mönchengladbach, Germany sets new standards with a unique mixture of historical ambience and modern bathroom design. All signs point to growth: In 2008 the central warehouse will move to a state-of-the-art logistics centre. Several hundred thousand articles can be stored on 10,000 square metres and can be delivered immediately.
2012: More variety – new name
Reuter Badshop becomes "reuter.de"
And Reuter continued to expand - in addition to bathroom products, the range now also includes kitchen articles, designer lighting, furniture and home accessories. In order to focus more strongly on expanding the product range, the name changed from "Reuter Badshop" to "reuter.de" in 2012.
2013: Reuter Profishop started
"As professionals need more!"
In 2013 the Reuter Profishop went online. Fairness and transparency - specialist tradesmen now also benefit from this and are able to order top-quality brand products at low online prices. The motto is: "as professionals need more!" namely a huge selection of well-known branded products, fair, transparent prices and less dependence on regional wholesale with its own brands in a three-tier distribution system.
2015/2016: A big family
Strengthening the team
After completing their studies in business economics, the two daughters, Sarah and Jana Reuter, joined the business group to pave the way for a successful future together with their father and more than 480 employees.
2016: A changing economy
Reuter as a model for digital transformation
From a small plumbing business to a bathroom and sanitary retailer to one of the largest specialists and online retailers for bathroom and living decor: Reuter has managed to make the transition to an innovative and digital medium-sized enterprise as a family business. Reason enough for the jury of the competition "NRW - Economy in Change" to honour Reuter 2016 as a role model for this structural change. For the second time in a row Reuter is awarded "Best Bathroom Outfitter" in Focus Money's "Germany Test"
2017: Base for further expansion
Purchase of property in the Nordpark
Reuter acquires a about 25,000 square metre site in the Nordpark, Mönchengladbach, Germany creating the best conditions for further expansion. In the near future, the new administration building is to be built here in a top location, easily visible directly from the Aachener Street and with good transport connections.
2017: Opening in the Medienhafen
New store and office in Dusseldorf
In the middle of Dusseldorf's centrally located media harbour, the Reuter Store opened with showroom areas for bathroom furnishings, bathroom accessories and lighting. Every day visitors come from a surrounding area of 200 kilometers to experience the online offers of various brands on-site and to be personally advised by professional and competent staff. Digitisation successfully finds its way into the shopping experience on-site, for example with digital price tags that can be scanned via a mobile phone or tablet and individual lighting control via a touch display.
2017: Modern shopping experience
reuter.de goes mobile!
Sit comfortably on the couch and furnish your new dream bathroom or quickly buy some bathroom accessories whilst in a café: now even easier, the Reuter online shop is now optimised for mobile devices. In order to create the perfect shopping experience for customers with smartphones and tablets, reuter.de has been adapted to a modern responsive design.
2018: growing logistics
Expansion area in Schwalmtal
There is a lot to do: with an increasing number of visitors at reuter.de, the number of orders also increases annually. In order to ensure high product availability and fast shipping in the future, Reuter and its logistics service provider Lagro Logistik GmbH are expanding the logistics area by an additional about 10,000 square metres through an additional location in Schwalmtal, Germany.
2020: French internationalisation
Reuter says “Bienvenue !”
Reuter has successfully started its international expansion in France. To this end, Reuter SAS was founded as a new company under the management of Emmanuel Nogués, an experienced industry expert. Reuter welcomes its French colleagues to their new offices in Paris. Since then the French team has been continuously expanding. In particular, the areas of sales, marketing and IT are being independently developed. Also planned: our own store in Paris.
2021: new logistics centre in operation
One location for joint success
For Reuter, it feels like coming home: the newly built, approx. 40,000 square metre, state-of-the-art administration and logistics centre in Mönchengladbach-Rheindahlen is now fully operational. In addition to the online mail-order warehouse for bathroom products, the new location houses a three-storey office building and a large film and photo studio. For completely satisfied customers and business partners, the work processes have been running at full speed ever since. A true milestone for the family business!
2021-2023: Growing as a family
As an innovative technology company and family business, Reuter will continue to remain true to its location in the Lower Rhine. The goal: to grow together and to continue the success story of satisfied customers and business partners. The plans for a state-of-the-art administration building with its own day-care centre, fitness centre, concierge service, catering and concept store in the Nordpark, Mönchengladbach, Germany have already begun for the best possible and modern working environment for the now more than 850 employees.
Sponsoring — joint enthusiasm
Shared values and international growth are essential components for the development of Reuter. So what could be more natural than to join forces with partners who share the same feeling of commitment to their home region and, above all, the same passion for daily activities. The common goal: to inspire people in the region as well as nationwide with TOP services and of course TOP products.
Connected with home
Co-Sponsor of Borussia Mönchengladbach
The home team in the heart - of course this also applies to Reuter. The family business has its home on the Lower Rhine and shares the enthusiasm and positive mood that emanates from the football team. The online retailer supports the Bundesliga team as a co-sponsor and is therefore also well known to the fans in the BORUSSIA-PARK.
