Old Electrical Appliances

Too damaging and too dangerous for the rubbish

Old electrical and electronic equipment may be too harmful in terms of waste, others contain hazardous substances and should therefore not be disposed of with household waste. In Germany, how such old electrical and electronic equipment is to be handled is regulated in the current ElektroG (“Act Governing the Sale, Return and Environmentally Sound Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Equipment”).

According to this law, owners of such old appliances must separate them from unsorted municipal waste for collection. In other words: such old appliances do not belong in the household waste, but must be disposed of separately! There are several possibilities for disposal, e.g. return to the dealers of electrical appliances or return to the local recycling facilities of the public waste disposal authorities.

To make this clear, all new electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market since 2005 is marked with the symbol of a crossed-out wheelie bin, which is a visible sign of resource conservation and environmental protection, as shown below:

Owners of waste electrical and electronic equipment should remove batteries and accumulators which are not completely sealed within the appliance before they are handed in at a collection point.

In addition, the consumer is solely responsible for ensuring that all personal data that may be contained on waste equipment is deleted before it is handed in at a collection point. The consumer is therefore legally obliged, in their own interest, to backup all existing data, such as messages, music, photos, etc., before they are handed in and then to delete them permanently from the waste equipment.

Not in the rubbish - where then? Quite simple: in order to permanently increase the actual quantity of waste electrical and electronic equipment taken back, retailers (dealers) of electrical and electronic equipment in Germany are obliged to take back waste electrical and electronic equipment from the end user (provided that their sales or shipping area is larger than 400 square metres, depending on whether they are static or distance sellers). In particular, the following statutory provisions apply:

  • Any small old appliance with an edge length up to 25 centimetres, i.e. no outer dimension of the old appliance is greater than 25 centimetres, must be taken back even if the customer does not buy anything in return (0:1 take-back). However, the take-back is limited to normal household quantities.
  • Larger old appliances with an edge length of more than 25 centimetres must only be accepted by the dealer if they sell something of the same type in return (1:1 take-back), i.e. old and new appliances must essentially fulfil the same functions and be assigned to an identical appliance category.

In Germany, Reuter works together with a service provider who takes over the transport and proper disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Please note that this method of return only applies to Germany.

In addition to returning old electrical equipment to Reuter, you can of course also return it to your local recycling centre - also free of charge.
