Which Floor Lamp is For Me?

The main thing is that you like the floor lamp. However, it also needs to fulfil other requirements. A work light in an office naturally has different requirements to ambient lighting in a living room.

You should answer four questions in this context:

Where Should a Floor Lamp Go?

In principle, a floor lamp can be placed anywhere with enough space and a plug socket. This is what makes them so practical and popular.

Living Room

They look right at home in the living room, where they can be used as accent lighting as well as reading lights. If a floor lamp is to be used for both purposes, you'll need one with an additional arm for reading.

Dining Room

Arc lamps are often used in dining rooms. Their curved shape makes them a great alternative to hanging lights. If you want to add a cosy touch to the room you can of course use a different type of floor lamp such as a light pillar or uplighter for indirect light.

Bedroom

Atmospheric light is the most sought-after light in the bedroom. Floor lamps are a great option here as they emit a diffused light. If you have enough space you can also create a reading corner by choosing a floor lamp that emits a direct light.

Office

Office floor lamps are busy bees responsible for displaying your desk in the right light. That's why you'll need a light that is directed downwards. They should ideally be easy to move around, like a large desk lamp.

Bathroom

You can of course use floor lamps in bathrooms as long as they have an IP44 rating to protect them from splashes of water. What can you do? Take a look at the outdoor lights - there are some floor lamps here. Or place the floor lamp in the bathroom away from any water spray that may come from the washbasin, shower or bath.

Indirect or direct light?

When purchasing a new floor lamp, you should consider whether it needs to emit a direct or indirect light - or a combination of the two. Generally speaking, a direct light means you can see the bulb and an indirect light means the bulb is hidden.

An indirect light is a diffuse light. It is a soft light that evenly illuminates a room in a low-contrast and shadow-free way. For working or reading, a floor lamp is recommended that throws light directly onto the book or work materials. You can filter a range of floor lamps based on their light output in our store.

Arc lamps

Arc lamps are the largest of all floor lamps. They have a long, curved arm and heavy base to prevent the lamp from falling over. Lampshades

Lampshades are something of a classic among floor lamps. They are available in many different designs. Some feature translucent materials or glass, or opaque shades made from metal. Some look like old headlights. The design of the base can vary a lot too. There are traditional ones with one leg, nostalgic wooden tripod bases or others with a flexible base like a desk lamp.

Tripod floor lamps

Three-legged or tripod floor lamps have come back into fashion over the past few years. The three legs, which are sometimes longer or sometimes shorter, are characteristic and are made from various materials such as wood or metal. They often come with lampshades and you'll find plenty of them here.

Light pillars

Light pillars are sculptural lights with a long, tall light fixture. They typically emit a diffused light and some even play with light and shade. If you're looking for a floor lamp that not only brightens a room but is also decorative, you can't go wrong with a light pillar.

Globe-shaped lights

Globe-shaped lights are most commonly found as pendant lights, however they are also available as floor lamps. The name says it all - there isn't much more to add. The head of the lamp is shaped like a globe. Most of them emit a diffuse light but you'll also find globe-shaped lamps with an opaque head that is open on one side. This emits a specific light.

Curved lamps, lampshades, light pillars: these are all floor lamps names after their appearance. However, there are also floor lamps that focus primarily on function. Examples of these include reading lamps and uplights.

LED Floor Lamps

Light bulbs were yesterday - nowadays its all about LEDs. This naturally applies to floor lamps too. They either feature integrated LEDs or LED bulbs that can be screwed in. You can easily change your existing floor lamp to one with LEDs.

But what makes LEDs so great? For one, they consume far less energy than standard lightbulbs, yet they emit the same amount of light. They are also longer lasting. Floor lamps with integrated LEDs can last a good 30 years, even if they're used for 4 hours a day.
