Modern Hanging Lights - Surprisingly Diverse

Hanging lights are no longer just for the dining room, but also look great in kitchens, bedrooms and even bathrooms. This is simply because they are more striking than ceiling lights and boldly stand out with their lighting and shape.

You'll notice that a beautiful pendant light works wonders. It not only illuminates the room but is also a real showpiece to look at.

What is a Pendant Light?

In principle, pendant lights are ceiling lights that hang from a cable.  For lighter pendant lights the electricity cable will suffice, whereas heavier lights require additional support from wires, for example. Tension relief may also be required to prevent the electric cable from pulling out of the lamp holder.

What to Consider Before Making a Purchase

Before purchasing a new pendant light, it's useful to consider a few things about the type of model first. First, take a look around the room. Will a large, hanging light look right here or would a smaller, more simple design work better here?

Think also about the area to be illuminated. For example, your dining table or coffee table: how big must the beam of light be to optimally illuminate the surface of the table? Will a light with one bulb work or do you need several? For longer tables and countertops, rows of multiple pendant lights are ideal. Or two-lamp or three-lamp hanging lights.

Thirdly, you need to choose the right design. The lighting effect is very important here: lights with lampshades send their light upwards or downwards while globe lights and glass lights illuminate the rest of the room.

LED Pendant Lights are Becoming More Popular

Lighting in an energy-saving and stylish way: LED pendant lights make this possible. Although they are more expensive to buy, they cost less to run and have a longer lifespan. The light is also much more pleasant than the early days of LED lights.

Nowadays, there are LED lights in a variety of different colours and some are even adjustable. You can then choose whether your hanging lamp should emit a cosy, warm white or bright, neutral white.

If you need to adjust the brightness as well as light colour, then dimmable LED pendant luminaires are for you. In our store, you'll find pendant lights operated via an external dimmer as well as lights with an integrated dimmer.

Diverse Design

Very few pendant lights are used purely for workplace lighting: other types of lighting such as ceiling lights or built-in lights exist for this purpose. The design of the hanging light therefore plays an even greater role.

Globe-shaped lights and shade lights are popular types of hanging light. Chandeliers are particularly impressive looking: at Reuter we offer traditional styles with crystals and LED candles but also modern designs too. Large pendant lights naturally work best in older buildings and with high ceilings. They also look great in galleries and in modern surroundings provided there is enough space.

For various rooms

Since hanging lights descend lower into the room, they are not suitable for every room or area of a room. They are particularly popular above dining tables or coffee tables, over kitchen counters or above the bed or bedside table in the bedroom. They can also be hung in hallways if the ceiling is high enough. Or how about outdoors under a covered terrace or balcony?

What Height to Mount Them?

Height plays an important role when it comes to hanging pendant lights. If they hang freely in the room, they should be high enough that you can't hit your head on them. If they hang over a coffee table or dining table, ensure that people sitting opposite each other don't have light shining into their eyes. The cable may need to be shortened if so.

Here are some measurements:

• Allow around 60 to 70 cm of space between tables and the bottom of the hanging light. If they are larger, this could be increased to 75 centimetres.
• 30 centimetres of space is adequate above a night stand.
• Above a kitchen island, the lights should hang at shoulder height so that they do not dazzle or impede your activities. Depending on your height, this could be 1.50 metres or 1.60 metres above the kitchen floor.
• In hallways, ensure that pendant lights hang at least 1.90 metres above the floor so that nobody has to stoop.

Height-adjustable Hanging Lights

Height-adjustable pendant lights are practical They can be optimally adapted for different tasks. For example, if the dining table is used for doing homework as well as eating. You'll find a number of these lights in a wide variety of designs in our store. These could be triple headed hanging lights, bar-shaped lights or with a lampshade.

The Right Size

How long, wide or low should a pendant light be to fit perfectly in your home? This is not an easy question to answer. Larger hanging lights tend to look better in more spacious rooms and smaller lights work better in smaller spaces.

Check where the light is to be installed. A larger light is better over a dining table, whereas a smaller light is better over a small couch.  A hanging light should never be larger than the table.

You can also place multiple smaller pendant lights above a table. Check the distance between them in this case. If using three lights, the distance between them should be equal to effectively divide the table into quarters.

What Shape to Choose?

The shape can be based on the shape of the dining table. Round pendant lights look great above a round dining table, whereas square-shaped models look better over rectangular tables.

For longer dining tables, elongated hanging lights or multiple lights in a row look good. These can also be round. In the end, it is really down to personal taste.
