this face mask is a makeshift mask. It is neither a certified medical product nor personal protective equipment (PPE). Its effectiveness in protecting against viruses, infections or harmful substances such as fine dust has not been proven. The covers have not been tested or approved for use in the health and care sector or as an occupational safety measure. A complete protection of the wearer of this cover against transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to himself and others is therefore not guaranteed.
The Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte (German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices) recommends the wearing of these so-called "community masks". The distribution of droplets when breathing, coughing or sneezing can be reduced by the additional fabric, while at the same time the wearers contribute to containing the further spread of SARS-CoV-2. Even more importantly, face masks create an awareness of "social distancing" and a mindful approach to each other.
The hygiene measures recommended by the RKI (Robert Koch Institute), especially the distance of at least 1.50 m to other persons, must still be followed.
